My students are about to begin a new novel, so I’m pulling out the old index card method for collecting themes.
First, I give everyone an index card, and then I jot down 10-15 major themes to track in the novel.
Next, I have the students copy down the themes onto their cards.
As the students read, they can write down the page number of each theme example found onto the card. This way the students have a collection of themes with page numbers for timed writes, projects, and papers.
It’s simple. It’s quick. It’s easy.
Sometimes I make a bookmark for the kids with the reading schedule on it, and the students put the theme list on the back of the bookmark.
I like this because the students have no excuse for being behind in the reading when I have provided the due dates well early.
