I believe unions should only fight for better benefits, higher wages, and working conditions. These are the only issues I will discuss as a union executive board member, and I don’t believe my union(s) should take moral stands on issues like the Iraq War or abortion or other issues, divisive or not.
Also, I don’t expect everyone to support fully the local union or what the state/local unions declare as core issues or what official positions they take on benefits packages or which people will be the primary focus of bargaining. I understand this. Some people don’t like unions at all or simply disagree with what unions fight for. I get it, and that’s fine.
But I draw the line at hypocrisy. Read the rest of this entry »

Back in September I posted about how my principal canceled Open House without informing the staff first, so we were bombarded with complaints and questions but didn’t know how to answer them. It was a PR nightmare, and we are still paying the price in lost support.
Well, disaster may strike twice.
A parent asked the principal if we would have Open House next year and go back to our normal style of conferences. Our fearless leader replied, “We’re looking into it.” I don’t think she gets it.
Ugh!
By the way, this follows her circumventing department heads and creating new block classes, which were directly spoken of as verboten by the district office personnel. Nothing like building trust!
